The Sistine Chapel is located in Vatican City, just outside of Rome, Italy. It is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the residence of the pope.  The Sistine Chapel is famous for its 500 year old frescoes, or paintings, that cover its walls and ceilings.

The interior walls and ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were painted by many artists over a period of several years. The decoration of the walls began in 1481, and was completed by Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio,  Cosimo Rosselli, Biagio di Antonio, Bartolomeo della Gatta, and Luca Signorelli. The frescoes depict scenes from the Bible, including stories of Moses and Jesus Christ.

The frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are perhaps the most famous part of the building. The ceiling was painted by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564), known simply as Micelangelo. He started his work in 1508 and completed it in 1512. The frescoes on the ceiling focus on the stories of the book of Genesis.
