Milk Art

Create colorful designs using milk as your canvas.

Monday, August 24

Today you will create colorful designs with milk! All you need is a few simple ingredients. Watch this video for an introduction to the experiment: https://youtu.be/zEdtZzJSU4Y

The Science Fun for Everyone! website was used as the source for this activity: https://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/milk-art/

This activity is for all ages.

Supplies:

  • A bowl
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Cotton swap
  • Food coloring

The Challenge:

Follow these easy steps to create Milk Art!

  1. Pour the milk into a bowl.
  2. Place one drop of each food color in different places around the milk.
  3. Place a small amount of liquid dish soap on the tip of the cotton swap, and then begin to touch the spots of colors.
  4. Keep going! Continue "painting" with your cotton swap and see what designs you create. Take pictures of your designs, and if you want, start all over with new colors!
  5. To clean up, all you need to do is wash the milk down the sink!

Time to Reflect:

What's going on?

The food coloring sits on top of fat in the milk. Dish soap breaks up fat, so when the cotton swap with dish soap touches the food coloring, it spreads out because the fat separates.
